'Bay hunter in a meadow' by JAMES LODER OF BATH (1784-1860), a finely painted oil on canvas in very good original unlined condition, recently subject to a very light cleaning. James Loder was a prolific sporting painter who lived and worked in Bath at the end of the Georgian and into the Victorian era, though his style is firmly rooted in the earlier period. He frequented numerous racecourses in the south-west of England and south Wales. His work shows a lively awareness of human and equine characterisation. He was the father of Edwin Loder, also a sporting painter. The painting is signed and dated (1838) bottom right, size 75 x 57cm.
